About the museum
The Archaeological Collection of Apeiranthos, also known as the Apeiranthos Museum, was founded by the Ephorate of Antiquities of the Cyclades on the initiative of the ephor Nikolaos Zafeiropoulos, with the assistance of the mathematician and collector Michalis Vardanis from Apeiranthos. Vardanis supported the Archaeological Service with great commitment in its struggle against the illicit trade in antiquities that plagued the Cyclades, and especially Naxos.
In 1962 the antiquities collected by Vardanis were housed in the house of Maria Vlasi in Platsa, Apeiranthos, and formed the core of the state collection, which was quickly enriched with donations from other residents. Since 1977 the antiquities have been housed in a single-room old building.
The collection’s register records thousands of objects, of which only a part is on display: marble and clay figurines, sculptures, vessels, tools, jewellery and other finds. The Early Cycladic collection is considered one of the most important of its kind in the world. The crowning glory of the museum is the twelve slabs with incised representations from Korfi t’ Aroniou. It is the only museum that has been created exclusively with contributions from the residents of its locality.
