About the museum
The Geological Museum of Apeiranthos began in 1964 as a small mineral collection in the village’s primary school, on the initiative of Manolis Glezos. Today it is housed on the ground floor of the Cultural Centre and belongs to the Municipality of Naxos and Lesser Cyclades.
The exhibition presents the geology of Naxos and the southern Aegean in two halls. The “Naxos Hall”, created in 2016, contains the geological map of the island, rock samples and exhibits on emery and marble. The “Aegean and World Hall”, redesigned with the assistance of Professor Nikolaos Skarpelis, houses rocks, minerals, ores, fossils and fluorescent minerals from the Aegean and from other countries. Information is given in Greek and English. The museum also runs an educational programme on the identification of minerals, Naxian marble and emery.
