About the museum
The Archaeological Collection of Atalanti, of the town identified with ancient Opous, is housed in the old Gymnasium of Atalanti, a building listed as a protected monument. It displays finds from excavations in eastern Lokris and in northeastern ancient Phocis, covering the period from the Neolithic to the Roman era.
Among the finds is the torso of a Roman general, as well as a limestone (poros) funerary statue from the grave monuments and sarcophagi of the eastern cemetery of ancient Opous, which is the only one of its kind in the collection. The museum also includes fragments of Cycladic figurines and “frying-pan-shaped” vessels, which testify to the region’s special relations with the Aegean islands.
