About the museum
The Archaeological Museum of Chalkida is housed in a listed neoclassical building from the early 20th century, designed by the architect Alexandros Lykakis. The collection presents monuments mainly from Chalkida and its surroundings, with references also to the wider island of Euboea. Most exhibits come from excavations by the Archaeological Service, while some were acquired through private donations, the most important being the bequest of the private collection of the lawyer and politician Alexandros Oikonomou.
The display is arranged chronologically in three galleries on the ground floor and traces the history of Chalkida from the Middle Palaeolithic period, around 100,000 years ago, to the late Roman period, the 4th century AD. In the courtyard of the museum, stone objects from historical times are displayed, documenting the long and uninterrupted history of Chalkida and Euboea.
