About the museum
The Zygomala Museum is the life’s work of Loukia Zygomala. After the death of her husband in 1930 she settled in Avlonas, Attica, where she built her stone-built mansion-farmhouse, designed by the architect Nikolaos Zoumboulidis, within a lush estate. In 1935 she added a further section to the house, which two years later housed the museum with the exhibition of her embroideries.
Zygomala had organised embroidery schools and had distinguished herself at the International Exhibition of Decorative Arts in Paris in 1925. After her death the house passed to the Greek state, and the museum operated with interruptions; from the early 1990s it reopened to the public. Since 2022 it has been under the supervision of the Museum of Modern Greek Culture, and since 2025 it has operated in renewed form.
The exhibition space presents the collection of traditional embroideries of Loukia Zygomala, which come mainly from Attica, Boeotia and Corinthia: embroidered costume parts such as shirts, tzakoi, singounia and sashes, as well as samples of designs. There are also embroidered decorative objects and a symbolic reconstruction of the Greek delegation’s pavilion in Paris in 1925. In the house, selected household items, family photographs and personal objects of her son Andreas, who was killed in 1914 in the North Epirus struggle, are on display.
