About the museum
The Archaeological Museum of Schimatari was founded in 1890 by the Archaeological Society at Athens and is the oldest museum in Boeotia. It was created to house the finds from excavations at ancient Tanagra, about five kilometres to the south, and it is still housed in its original building, which was renovated in 2006.
Through its exhibits, mainly funerary, visitors can follow the development of the art of ancient Tanagra and learn about the myths, cults and burial customs associated with them. The museum has separate rooms for the prehistoric, Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods. Funerary monuments, marble relief stelae, sculptures, vessels, jewellery and figurines are on display, and finds from Roman tombs in the area are of particular importance. The inscriptions provide information about the festivals, economic life and administration of the region. In the courtyard, funerary monuments, parts of buildings and sanctuaries, and two Christian inscriptions are displayed.
