About the museum
The building of the Archaeological Museum of Drama was constructed by the Municipality of Drama and handed over to the Ministry of Culture. In this way the local community sped up the founding of the museum in the prefectural capital. The building is relatively small, but it marked the beginning of systematic archaeological research and of promoting the cultural identity of the region.
The galleries document the cultural history of Drama, from the nomadic hunters of the Middle Palaeolithic (around 50,000 BC), through the first farmers and herders of the Neolithic and the first patriarchal societies of the Bronze Age, to the powerful clans of the Early Iron Age. The Neolithic settlements of Sitagroi and Arkadiko and the burial mounds of the area hold a special place.
The exhibition recreates the household of the Neolithic farmers and their everyday habits, while a special theme is the cult of Dionysus, to whom the inhabitants attributed their prosperity and protection.
