About the museum

The Museum of Church Art of Drama has been in operation since 1999. It is housed in the building of the former boarding house of the Metropolis of Drama, where Metropolitan Dionysios had gathered many relics so that they could be preserved and safeguarded. Over time the relics were conserved and found their place in the new museum.

On the first floor are displayed folk-art icons, carved iconostasis doors and parts of templa (chancel screens). On the second floor a pair of iconostasis doors with the Annunciation of the Theotokos, the Virgin Hodegetria and Christ Blessing stand out; they most probably come from the church of the Taxiarchs in Drama. Also displayed are episcopal vestments of the metropolitans of Drama, Grevena, Nevrokopi and Zichni. The most important are the vestments of the martyr-metropolitan of Smyrna, Chrysostomos.

The third floor mainly houses icons in the folk style. On the fourth floor there are portable icons and many priestly and deacon vestments, while the fifth floor contains church vessels: chalices, lances, exapterygon (six-winged liturgical fans), processional crosses and antimensia (altar cloths).
