About the museum
The Archaeological Museum of Kavala has been in operation since 1964, in the building designed by the architects Dimitrios Fatouros and Ioannis Triantafyllidis, professors at the Polytechnic School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
The exhibition, organised in ten sections under the title “Neapolis, Christoupolis – Kavala”, presents the continuous history of the city from its foundation in the 7th century BC to the end of the Byzantine period. It includes prehistoric finds from the wider area and finds from the excavations of Neapolis, Amphipolis, Topeiros and Galepsos.
The architectural sculptures from the sanctuary of the Maiden, the goddess worshipped as the protector of Neapolis, hold a central place. The sanctuary was an Ionic temple of the early 5th century BC, built of Thasian marble, and it is the only known building of the ancient city. Two of its capitals have been placed at their original height. In the deposits of the sanctuary sculptures, coins, vessels and figurines were found, as well as a marble model of a temple, probably of the older temple of the goddess.
