About the museum
Fort Lisse belongs to the Metaxas Line, the defensive system on Greece's northern border in Eastern Macedonia. It lies near the village of Ochyro, about two kilometres from Kato Nevrokopi. On 6 and 7 April 1941, during the German invasion, the Greek army resisted here stubbornly against attacks by German divisions.
A monument was erected in memory of the battle and a small museum was created, which was renovated and reopened to the public in 2002. Visits take place through the underground galleries and spaces of the fort, with guided tours by the staff.
The exhibits include authentic objects from 1941: weapons of the Greek and German armies, uniforms, medals, personal items of soldiers and officers, and a map of the battle of the forts. In the courtyard, the artillery used for the defence is displayed. The collection is continually enriched with new objects, and along the route visitors learn the history through sound effects and accounts by soldiers.
