About the museum
From the mid-19th century, Kavala became the centre of the Balkan tobacco trade, thanks to its proximity to the areas where the famous tobacco “basma” was grown and to its natural harbour. The processing and trade of tobacco marked the modern history of the town, and the museum exists to preserve this heritage.
The Tobacco Museum operates as a public-law legal entity founded by the Municipality of Kavala. It is housed on the ground floor of the former Tobacco Organisation building, an industrial tobacco-processing building constructed from 1957 to 1962 to designs by Leandros Zoidis.
The exhibition space presents tools and machinery, photographic material, panels, archival documents and collections of objects related to tobacco, from traditional cultivation to industrial processing and trade. The distinctive feature of the museum is that it shows the commercial processing of oriental tobaccos, which is not presented in any other museum, and that it reconstructs the economic, social and technological history of Kavala and of East Macedonia and Thrace. The collection also includes rare documents, books on tobacco, tobacco trade maps and furniture of tobacco merchants.
