About the museum
The Historical Information Centre of Thermopylae of the Municipality of Lamia is located near the Monument of Leonidas and opened to the public in August 2010, as part of the Thermopylaia commemorations. It was created with European funding from ESPA 2007–2013.
The building, with an area of 878 square metres, has the shape of a spearhead, pointing towards the side from which the Persians entered Thermopylae. The centre complements the archaeological site and explains the battle and the topography of the area, which has changed owing to geological changes.
Visitors pass through three rooms. The room “Leonidas” is used for lectures and an introductory video; in the room “Dienekes” a short three-dimensional film with a reconstruction of the battle is shown; and in the room “Thermopylae” eight interactive touch surfaces present the context of the Persian Wars. The content was scientifically documented with the help of the Foundation of the Hellenic World.
