About the museum
The Archaeological Museum of Syros was founded in 1834 and is one of the oldest in the country. It was housed briefly in the Gymnasium and then in a building in what is now Nisaki. Since 1899 it has operated in four halls of the Town Hall of Ermoupoli, designed by Ernst Ziller and completed in 1876.
Initially the exhibition included objects from various areas of the Cyclades and the archaeological collection of I. Kokkonis, mainly marble inscriptions found on the island. In 1898 Christos Tsountas excavated the Early Cycladic settlement of Kastri and the cemetery of Chalandriani. The local government and the people of Syros asked that the antiquities remain on the island, and the mayor of the time made four halls of the neoclassical Town Hall available. In 1901 Tsountas himself transferred to the new museum finds from Chalandriani that were kept in the National Archaeological Museum.
Today the museum presents finds from across the Cyclades, the ancient city of Syros, Kastri and Chalandriani. One hall is dedicated to the archaeologist Christos Tsountas, with photographic material, diaries and objects from his excavations on the island, while the collections also include Byzantine sculptures and inscriptions.
