About the museum
The Industrial Museum of Hermoupolis opened on 12 May 2000 in the former Katsimantis paint factory near Plateia Iroon (Heroes Square) in the south of the town, where the heart of the industrial zone once beat. The building was erected in 1888, listed as a monument in 1984 and handed over by the Neorion shipyard to the Municipality of Ermoupoli in 1994.
The permanent collections, with more than 300 objects, are housed in the museum’s buildings: products of the first Greek glassworks, printing machinery, excavation finds from the steamship “Patris”, which sank off Kea in 1868, a rare four-cylinder Doxford marine engine and the electric car Enfield 8000 of the Neorion shipyard. In the courtyard stands one of the two wheels of the “Patris”.
The museum’s network also includes other historic industrial buildings: the Kornilakis tannery of 1880, the Anairousis shot factory and the Velissaropoulos weaving mill. The museum also has a technical library and an oral history archive, and it belongs to the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH).
