About the museum
The Archaeological Museum of Florina is housed in a building opposite the city’s railway station and presents the history of the region from its first settlement, around 5800 BC, to the Byzantine period. Large clay pithoi decorate the entrance.
The exhibition begins with prehistoric finds from the settlement of Armenochori and with the jaws of a giant mammoth, aged 200,000–500,000 years, found in the village of Sotiras. On the ground floor the collection of Roman sculpture dominates, and a whole hall is occupied by the floor mosaic of a Roman house from Kato Kleines.
On the first floor, objects of everyday use show life in the Hellenistic cities of Agios Pantaleimonas and Petres, while sculptures and milestones of the Egnatia Road from Petres are displayed, together with an inscribed shield from Vegora. The Byzantine Collection includes objects from the Byzantine monuments of Prespa, from the 10th to the 18th century.
