About the museum
On the hill of Agios Panteleimon, which dominates Florina, part of a Hellenistic city was excavated in 1930–1934. The remains uncovered at that time were destroyed in the 1950s during the construction of a hotel, and the existence of the city was confirmed only by the excavations of the 1980s.
The name of the city has been lost. It was founded in the time of Philip II, in the 4th century BC, and was abruptly abandoned at the beginning of the 1st century BC, probably because of a fire or a hostile invasion. So far an area of eight stremmata (a Greek unit of area) has been uncovered, with houses in four building blocks separated by streets. No public or cult buildings have been found, but the finds from the furnishings of the houses provide valuable information about the daily life of the inhabitants.
