About the museum
The house is located on the Panagia peninsula, in the old town of Kavala. Mehmet Ali, the ruler who founded the last dynasty of Egypt, was born in Kavala and lived here until the age of thirty. The building was constructed around 1780–1790, has an area of 330 square metres and was the largest house in the town in its day.
The larger part of it is two-storey and consists of two sections: the harem, with the most private spaces of the family, and the selamlik, the reception rooms. Today it operates as a museum. The interior decoration and objects such as Oriental carpets, furniture and ceramics give an impression of the original atmosphere. The research centre MOHA is based in the house and also organises educational programmes in the garden.
