About the museum

The Olive Museum is housed in the building of the old olive press of Elaiochori, a small village about 25 km from Kavala. The olive press first operated in 1950 and contributed to the development of the community and of the whole western area of the prefecture. It was abandoned in 1970 and later rebuilt with funding from the Third Community Support Framework. Today it belongs to the public-benefit enterprise of the Municipality of Eleftheres.

The museum has operated since 2008, and its aim is to rescue the traditional tools for cultivating the olive and processing the oil. All the machinery is authentic, has been repaired and can operate. The site, with a total area of about 3,000 square metres, includes an exhibition space with an event hall, an open-air theatre and tree-planted surroundings.

In the main area the crusher, the press and the vessels that separate the oil from the water are displayed. In the auxiliary area, which formerly served administrative work, tools for cultivating and harvesting the olive, millstones and demijohns are presented. In the courtyard there are machines for sorting olives by size and oil storage tanks.
