About the museum
The museum building was designed by the architect Stuart M. Shaw of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and was built on the initiative of the American School of Classical Studies from 1939 to 1955, when it opened to the public. The north wing was added in 1960–61, and the museum was renovated in 2014–2015.
The new permanent exhibition, inaugurated on 6 July 2024, occupies five halls around a central courtyard. It presents finds from various sites on the island, from the Middle Neolithic period to modern times, with the Sanctuary of the Great Gods as its central theme. The arrangement of the sections follows the route of the ancient visitor from the town to the sanctuary and the experience of initiation. In the reception hall, reconstructions of important structures of the sanctuary are on display.
The museum houses jewellery, coins, sculptures, inscriptions and finds from the necropolises of Samothrace. In the courtyard a copy of the famous Winged Victory of Samothrace dominates the space; the original is in the Louvre.
