About the museum
The Archaeological Museum of Skyros was founded in 1963 and displays objects that bear witness to the island's long history, from the Neolithic period to the Roman era. It is located on Brouk Square and has two rooms.
The exhibition features finds from important sites on the island, such as the Early Helladic settlement of Palamari and the cemeteries of historical times, as well as pottery, metal objects and sculptures from the 3rd millennium BC to the 2nd century AD. Characteristic exhibits include a Cypriot flask, an Attic Geometric pyxis with freestanding horses on its lid, and a ritual rhyton in the shape of a horse.
A small adjoining room houses the Kostiri folklore collection, a donation in memory of her brother, the archaeologist I. Papadimitriou, with a reconstruction of a typical Skyrian house and characteristic examples of the island's folk tradition. Stone objects from various periods are displayed in the courtyard.
