About the museum
The museum was founded in 1964 by the writer, journalist and researcher Manos Faltaits (1924–2017) and is considered one of the first local historical and folklore museums in Greece. It was created to rescue the traditional heritage of Skyros.
It is housed in the old mansion of the Faltaits family, which dominates the north-eastern tip of the town and is built on the largest tower of the Pelasgian walls of Skyros. The collection includes more than 10,000 objects that illuminate the everyday life, customs and traditions of Skyros and of the rest of Greece: one of the largest collections of traditional agricultural and livestock tools, traditional costumes, woven textiles, ceramics and woodcarvings.
The historical archive of the museum holds rare manuscripts, books, newspapers, engravings and maps. In summer the courtyard and the rooms host painting exhibitions, concerts and literary evenings.
