About the museum
The Alonissos Museum, also known as the Pirate Museum, is located on a hillside overlooking the harbour of Patitiri. It is housed in a modern four-storey building, where the collections of Kostas and Angela Mavriki are exhibited. Over a long period the couple gathered with love and care objects and heirlooms representing the cultural heritage of the island, and in 2000 they founded the museum.
In the basement, under the title “Alonissos at Work”, dioramas of the island’s old life are presented, with traditional costumes, folklore objects and trades that have disappeared. Equipment for olive pressing and wine production is exhibited, as well as workshops of the blacksmith, tanner, barber, baker, cooper, carpenter and farmer. Visitors gain an impression of life on the island before the devastating earthquake of 1965, which destroyed most of the old town.
On the first floor are the room with the pirate objects and an area with monuments to the national struggles from 1821, which honours the young men of Alonissos who fell in battles on the mainland and on the Albanian front. On the ground floor the shop operates and old cameras and accessories are displayed, while on the top floor is the “Molinaris” café with two terraces and a view of the harbour.
