About the museum
Skyros, lying almost at the centre of the Aegean between the Sporades, the Cyclades, Euboea and Lesbos, has been inhabited since the earliest Neolithic period. On the north-eastern coast, at the Kastraki headland of the Palamari bay, a fortified prehistoric settlement has been excavated.
The settlement is preserved to a large extent in good condition and covers an area of about 1.7 hectares. It was built on a low hill and is surrounded by a strong wall with successive horseshoe-shaped towers. The successive phases of construction and reconstruction of the wall and buildings, the organisation of the space, the management of rainwater and the abundance of well-preserved pottery show continuous habitation from the Early Helladic to the Middle Helladic period.
The geographical location, the town planning and above all the strong fortification with horseshoe-shaped towers, a feature of settlements engaged in metal trade, show the role of Palamari in the copper exchange networks of the Bronze Age.
