About the museum
The Skopelos Folklore Museum is housed in the mansion of the Nikolaidis family, one of the 18th-century mansions of Chora. The building was constructed in 1795, suffered serious damage in the earthquakes of 1963 and was rebuilt in 1971 on the basis of the original plans, retaining the traditional features of its interior and exterior. The family donated it to the Municipality of Skopelos in 1991, and the museum opened to the public in August 1992.
Visitors get a picture of what a house of the previous century was like. The exhibits include embroideries, carved furniture by local craftsmen, ceramics, knives, paintings and miniature ship models. The traditional costume of Skopelos stands out, as does the bridal chamber with the dowry and the baby’s cradle. On the ground floor is the sitting room with the fireplace, and in the basement agricultural tools and objects of daily use are displayed. Most of the exhibits come from donations by families of the island.
The museum organises events and educational programmes and continually collects ethnological and folklore material about the island, such as old photographs.
