About the museum
The Archaeological Museum of Symi is housed in Chorio, the island’s old settlement, in two mansions from the 18th and 19th centuries: the Farmakidis house and the Chatziagapitou mansion. The complex includes floors, kitchens, cisterns and gardens and extends over three levels. The museum reopened in 2020 after complete restoration of the buildings.
The exhibition follows a path from the modern era back to the distant past. The exhibits cover the period from antiquity to the post-Byzantine era and present the history, cultural identity, artistic tradition and social life of the island.
In the Chatziagapitou mansion, which was restored by the Archaeological Service, the objects of the modern era are arranged to recreate the interior of a traditional Symiot house. The folklore section includes, among other things, a sponge-diving helmet and traditional costumes.
