About the museum
The Naftiko Mouseio Symis was founded in 1983 with the aim of gathering everything related to the island’s maritime tradition. Since 1990 it has been housed in a neoclassical building in Yialos, on Plateia 8is Maiou 1945, on the site where the central shipyard of Symi once stood.
Most of the exhibition is devoted to sponge fishing, historically a basic activity of the island. On display are diving machines, diving helmets, various types of sponges and skandalopetres, the stones the divers used to sink themselves. Part of the sponge fishers’ equipment comes from a donation by the traditional engineer Tasos Anastasiadis, while the models of sponge-fishing boats are works by Antonis Polias.
The museum also houses ship models, old maps, nautical instruments and tools, which present the history of shipping on Symi.
