About the museum
The archaeological site of Asini, which the poet Giorgos Seferis celebrated in his poem “The King of Asini”, overlooks the sea from above. It lies between Psili Ammos in Tolo and Plaka in Drapano, two popular beaches of the Gulf of Argos. The present name of the hill is Kastraki, a green natural peninsula that is identified with the core of ancient Asine.
In the 1920s the Swedish archaeologists who undertook the excavation, with the active support of King Gustaf VI Adolf of Sweden, brought to light settlements of the Early Helladic, Middle Helladic, Mycenaean, Geometric, Archaic and Hellenistic periods. This is a complex historical puzzle spanning a total of 3,000 years, which continues to be studied.
The recent presentation of the site, in harmony with the natural environment, gave a new perspective to the finds and led to a comprehensive presentation of local history. On the site the sea walls, the eastern tower and an underground Roman cistern can be seen.
