About the museum
The Diachronic Museum of Larissa is located on the Mezourlo hill, on the Larissa–Trikala ring road. There one can see objects made of the green Thessalian stone from the Chasampali quarries, which lie within a radius of about 10 kilometres. This stone has been used in major monuments around the world, and its extraction was permanently halted in 1985 for reasons of cost.
The permanent exhibition is organised in eleven conceptual sections that follow the development of Thessalian culture from the Palaeolithic to the 19th century. The narrative follows chronological axes and specific themes and approaches time and space through the parallel presentation of periods and the examination of the state, institutions and structures of power.
The exhibits include a rich Neolithic collection, funerary stelae and characteristic objects from all historical periods, which support the central theme of the exhibition: the diachronic development and organisation of Larissa and neighbouring cities. One of the few menhirs found in Greece stands out, from Magoula in Larissa: the first attempt by people of the Bronze Age to depict the human figure on a monumental scale.
