About the museum
The museum is housed in the Pappas Mill, an old flour mill in Larisa that is a rare example of an industrial complex in the city. The mill was founded in 1893 by Konstantinos Pappas and his partners K. Skaliora and Chr. Dimitriadis, on the banks of the Pineios, initially as a steam mill. It burned down in 1918, resumed operations from 1927 with new technology and roller mills, and in 1988 was bought by the Municipality of Larisa with the aim of making it a cultural centre; the central building has been declared a listed monument. After a fire in 2002 a multi-year restoration project followed.
The permanent exhibition “From Wheat to Flour” presents the sections of industrial processing: cleaning of the grain, grinding and flour-making, homogenisation of the flours and packaging. Digital and interactive exhibits explain the operation of the main machines, while a special hall is dedicated to the Larisa photographer Takis Tloupas, with photographs of pre-mechanical cultivation and of the people of the Thessalian plain. The museum organises educational programmes for children, adults, families and school groups.
