About the museum
The Municipal Art Gallery of Larissa – G.I. Katsigras Museum was founded in 1983, after the physician and collector Georgios Katsigras donated his collection to the Municipality of Larissa. In 1981 Georgios and Kaiti Katsigra decided to donate about 780 paintings, prints and drawings, on condition that a special building be erected and a legal entity be created under this name.
The collection was assembled in the period 1950–1965 and covers works from the 19th century to the mid-20th century. In November 2003 the gallery began operating in its new, owned building, and for the first time part of the collection was shown in a permanent exhibition, together with the furniture of Heinrich Schliemann. On 31 March 2019 the redesigned exhibition “Reconnection // Re-Connect” was inaugurated, curated by the art historian Syrago Tsiara, with 180 works and the Schliemann furniture.
The exhibition is organised around four concepts: the Spirit of Place, the Ideal Creatures, Intimacy and Combativeness. Apart from the permanent collection, the gallery has large exhibition spaces, such as the “Eirini Katsigra” hall, and courtyards for exhibitions, as well as an amphitheatre, an art library and a shop.
