About the museum
The Mouseio Stratiotikis Ktiniatrikis Ypiresias was inaugurated on 23 March 2005 and is housed in part of the “Plastiras” camp in Larissa, where the 1st Army is also based. Its permanent exhibition presents veterinary and equine material from the founding of the Veterinary Service of the Greek Army in 1904 to 1990, when the Equine Department was abolished.
The exhibits cover four periods: the founding of the service and the first veterinary hospitals in Athens, Larissa and Thessaloniki (1904–1922), the independence of the Veterinary Corps and the operation of microbiological food laboratories (1922–1944), the formation of the Veterinary and Equine Corps (1945–1962) and the gradual removal of animals from Army units (1963–1990). An important feature is the farriery building, since in 1961 the School of Farriers and Metalworkers was moved from Thessaloniki to Larissa.
The museum preserves relics used throughout the 20th century and recalls trades that have disappeared, such as the muleteer, the farrier and the saddler.
