About the museum
The Municipal Art Gallery of Ioannina opened in 1960 in the Mela building and was the first regional municipal art gallery in Greece. In 1965 it closed because of accommodation problems, and part of the collection was for a time housed in the Archaeological Museum of Ioannina.
Since 20 February 2000 it has been housed in the Archontiko Pyrsinella, at the junction of Korai and 28th October streets. The building was erected by the engineer Vergotis for the bibliophile and art lover Vasileios Pyrsinellas, who was for many years mayor of the town in the interwar period.
The permanent collection comprises about 500 works by Greek artists, in painting, printmaking and sculpture, from classical to contemporary. It has been enriched partly by purchases and mainly by donations from collectors and artists.
