Municipal Ethnographic Museum of Ioannina

Municipal museum in the Aslan Pasha Mosque, inside the castle (Kastro), with collections of the city's three communities: Christian, Jewish and Muslim.

Opening hoursAdmission €2

About the museum

The Municipal Ethnographic Museum of Ioannina is housed in the Aslan Pasha Mosque, one of the most important Ottoman monuments of the city. The mosque was built in 1617–1618 on the north-eastern acropolis of the castle, as part of a complex that also included a madrasa and a kitchen, and it probably stands on the site of a Byzantine church of Saint John.

The museum presents three collections, representing the three communities of the city: the Christian, the Jewish and the Muslim. The objects come from donations by prominent families and date from the 18th to the 20th century. They are useful and decorative objects made of various metals and porcelain, as well as weapons and costumes of the Ottoman period.

The Christian collection includes ecclesiastical silver vessels, vestments and books from the collection of Archbishop Spyridon. The Jewish collection includes curtains from the old synagogue and costumes of the once flourishing Jewish community of Ioannina. The objects of the Muslim collection are displayed in the central space: Oriental textiles of the 16th to 18th century, wooden furniture and ivory objects from the era of Ali Pasha, copper vessels and Muslim books.
