About the museum

The Historical Museum of Ioannina Ch. Nikolaou was created by Christos Nikolaou and his wife Elena Lolou, who over almost ten years collected rare objects from Ioannina and from other cities in Greece. The collection was first presented in an exhibition at Its Kale in 2015, on the anniversary of the liberation of the town, and the museum opened to the public on 7 October 2018.

It is housed in a two-storey listed stone mansion of 1900, where an urban Jewish family once lived and which was renovated for the museum’s needs. It is on Neoptolemou Street, opposite the central gate of the castle, and its exhibition spaces occupy both floors, in seven thematic rooms.

The exhibits number more than 600 and present life in Ioannina and the wider region from the late Ottoman period to the liberation of the town. Among them are a pasha’s uniform with gold-embroidered wire, silver jewellery, weapons, ceramics, costumes, firmans and objects from the hammam, as well as religious objects of the Muslim and Jewish communities.
