Folklore Museum “Kostas Frontzos”

About the museum

The Folklore Museum “Kostas Frontzos” belongs to the Society of Epirot Studies and the Foundation for Studies of the Ionian and Adriatic Region. It was founded on the initiative of Kostas Frontzos, president of both bodies, and opened in 1987, a year after his death.

It is housed in a 19th-century Ottoman mansion that belonged to Hayreddin Pasha and later hosted the Teacher Training College of Ioannina and the Boys’ Gymnasium. A bridge links the old building with the new wing, built in the five-year period 1995–2000 to a design by the architect Vasilis Charisis.

The permanent collection includes men’s and women’s traditional costumes from all over Epirus, silverwork and goldwork, embroideries, textiles, ceramics, woodcarvings and tools of traditional crafts. Also on display are a housewife’s room, a floor of an urban house from Ioannina and Kutahya porcelain.
