About the museum
The Dimotiki Pinakothiki Peiraia began operating in 1957 as a department of the Municipal Library, and since 1985 it has operated as an independent department of the municipality. Since January 2014 it has displayed works on the first floor of the Palio Taxydromeio (Old Post Office), at the corner of Filonos, Karaoli and Dimitriou streets.
The exhibition presents a small number of works by modern Greek painters, among them Nikolaos and Periklis Lytras, Konstantinos Maleas, Konstantinos Romanidis, Michail Oikonomou and Alexandros Christofis. Works by younger artists, with an emphasis on painters from Piraeus, are added at regular intervals. On the same floor, part of the sculpture collection of G. Kastriotis and the collection of stage designer Panos Aravantinos are displayed, with models, miniature stage sets, costume designs and posters.
The wider collection of the gallery also includes theatre costumes, photographs and personal items of the actor Manos Katrakis, works by the folk artist Stamatis Lazarou with sculptures in wood and stone, and works by the painter Kyriakos Tsakiris. Educational programmes for pre-school, primary and secondary pupils take place on the premises, and guided tours are available on request.
