About the museum
The Hellenic Maritime Museum was founded by the Society of the Naval Museum, which was set up to collect relics of the nation’s struggles at sea. In 1959 it was housed in a neoclassical three-storey building at the port of Zea, at 18 Akti Moutsopoulou, with six exhibition rooms on the first floor, and it was then called the Piraeus Naval Museum.
During the works to develop the coast of Freattyda, before the creation of the marina and with land reclamation of the bay, the Greek National Tourism Organisation (EOT) planned the museum’s permanent home for 1965–1967, adjoining the walls of Piraeus.
In the ten galleries of the new building, arranged in a semicircle, Greek history in relation to the sea is presented: from ancient shipbuilding and the development of ships in antiquity, through the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods, to the Greek War of Independence (1821), the navy in more recent times and maritime trade. The museum’s archival and photographic material is regarded as among the richest on Mediterranean history, while the library holds rare editions and nautical charts.
