About the museum
The idea for the museum was born in 1982, when Melina Mercouri gathered artists and cultural figures of the Mediterranean in Ydra. Her visit to the Nautical School of Ydra inspired officers of the Coast Guard to propose the creation of a museum. The first exhibits were kept at the Coast Guard School in Piraeus and formed the Museum of Merchant Shipping, which acquired legal status in 1991 and was renamed an institute by Law 2638/1998.
In 2007 it moved to the historic building at Odos Grigoriou Lampraki 154, where candidates for Greek seamen were examined in the past. The Institute is supervised by the Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy and aims to research Greek merchant shipping, as well as to collect, rescue and exhibit historical objects.
The exhibition follows a chronological order, from prehistoric times to the present. It includes ship models from antiquity to the present day, nautical instruments, paintings, lithographs, icons and other historical objects, while one section concerns the history and activities of the Coast Guard.
