About the museum
The Electric Railways Museum grew out of the idea of Manolis Fotopoulos, an employee of ISAP, who began to collect old uniforms, photographs, books and newspaper and magazine clippings. ISAP made space available in its building at Piraeus station, and the museum opened in 2005.
The collection includes around 2,000 objects, and the museum has an exhibition area of about 1,000 m², a storeroom and more than 3,000 books, printed items and photographs. It presents the history of the Athens–Piraeus railway, which began in 1869 as a steam line on the Piraeus–Thiseio route and was electrified in 1904.
It also devotes space to trams: the seafront line operated from 12 April 1910 to 3 December 1960, while the Piraeus–Perama line operated from 20 July 1936 to 24 March 1977.
