About the museum

The Ekklisiastiko Keimiliarcheio “Psychis Akos” of the Holy Metropolis of Serres and Nigrita continues the Ecclesiastical Museum, which had been operating since 1988 on the second floor of the Metropolis offices. The entire collection was moved to a new building, constructed from the ground up on Leonidas Papapavlou Street, and it opened on Sunday, 13 April.

In the rooms of the treasury, the exhibits are presented in four sections: holy icons, ecclesiastical wood carvings, liturgical vessels and gold embroidery. They come from churches and monasteries in the area of Serres and Nigrita and date from the 14th to the early 20th century. Icons form the largest category and mainly represent the post-Byzantine art of the region.

Among the important exhibits are an icon of the Panagia Odigitria (Virgin Hodegetria) of the 14th century; two 16th-century despotic icons (icons of Christ and of the Mother of God) depicting Christ Pantokrator and the Virgin Vrefokratousa, from the old metropolitan church of Agioi Theodoroi in Serres; and a proskynetarion (icon for veneration) by Dionysios of Fourna from the church of Agios Antonios. On the second floor there is, symbolically, an almost empty display case, waiting for the treasures of the Church of Serres that were stolen and are now outside Greece.
