About the museum
The Sarakatsani Folklore Museum has operated in Serres since 1979 and, since the late 1990s, has been housed in a newly built building constructed specifically for the display of the collection. In 1987 it was awarded the “Museum of the Year” title. It is unique worldwide in its subject.
On the three levels of the building (basement, ground floor and an upper floor in the form of a loft), the art and life of the Sarakatsani are presented through reconstructions and objects that reflect their nomadic way of life. On the ground floor, reconstructions of the traditional dwellings, the kalyvia, are displayed; they were built from woven reeds or grasses and date from the interwar period.
Woven textiles and embroideries play a dominant role, with an extensive presentation of Sarakatsani art in clothing and in textile furnishings, and a loom is also shown. The museum also houses a collection of historical photographs from across mainland Greece from 1906 to 1950, and a collection of recordings of traditional songs and music. Since 1998 it has offered a two-hour educational programme for primary school pupils.
