About the museum
The Museum of Contemporary Art “Konstantinos Xenakis Art Gallery” is housed in the “Konstantinos Karamanlis” Cultural Park, in the former Papalouka military camp, near the centre of Serres. The collection of the internationally renowned Greek artist Konstantinos Xenakis comprises 171 works from all his artistic periods, which he donated to the Municipality of Serres, envisaging a unique municipal art gallery in the city.
The vision was realised after systematic efforts by the Municipality of Serres, with the contribution of Professor Aristotelis Naniopoulos of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the associations “Serraion Politeia” and “Study and Research of the History of Serres”. Through the programme “Cultural Dipole” (INTERREG V-A Greece–Bulgaria 2014–2020) a listed building of the camp was restored and converted into a contemporary museum, accessible to people with mobility and visual impairments and almost energy self-sufficient. The ground-floor building covers an area of 660 square metres. The artist himself took an active part in the museological studies and in the first phase of the museum’s realisation.
Konstantinos Xenakis died on 6 June 2020 without seeing the museum completed. The museum was inaugurated on 14 May 2022. The museography allows visitors to follow the development of his work, not only through the sequence of works in thematic sections, but also through projections and environments that present the whole of his artistic output.
