About the museum
The Vlach Folklore Museum of Serres belongs to the Association of Vlachs of the Serres prefecture “Georgakis Olympios”, which had long wished for a museum of its own. It was completed in 2008 and has been open to the public since then. Its aim is to preserve, present and pass on the popular culture of the Vlachs of the wider Serres area.
The association’s building has three levels: a basement where traditional dance lessons are held, a space with a reconstructed interior of a Vlach house, with woven cushions and sofrades (low tables), and a floor with the exhibits. The museological study is by Christos Broufas. The themes include childhood, livestock farming, weaving, the bridal and groom’s costume with the dowry, the household table and bread baking, as well as traditional handmade jewellery. The museum also has a library and a wardrobe with traditional Vlach costumes, mainly from donations by members of the association.
