Μουσείο Χερσονήσου Αίμου – Συλλογές Αλέξανδρου Χατζηλιά

Private museum in Serres with folklore and ethnological collections in six sections, from musical instruments and jewellery to weapons and reconstructions of traditional spaces.

About the museum

The museum is housed on the ground floor of a building in the centre of Serres and is a private initiative of the Chatzilias family. Its collections come from the activity of Dina and Alekos Chatzilias, who had been collecting objects since 1965, for decades.

The exhibition is organised in six sections: traditional musical instruments, jewellery, weapons and costumes, church vessels, traditional costumes, and reconstructions of folk life. The reconstructions include a Thracian room, an Asia Minor reception room and a corner of the Sarakatsani.

The display cases also contain Neolithic figurines and tools, embroidery, rugs and paintings from Greece and Asia Minor from the 19th century. Two 17th-century Thracian lyres, about 200 clasps and 120 silver oil lamps from churches in Macedonia stand out. The equipment of 25 traditional trades, such as the saddler, the cobbler, the blacksmith and the watermill, is not on display due to lack of space.
