About the museum

The museum is housed in a neoclassical building from 1828 in the centre of the town of Aegina. The house belonged to Panagis Iriotis, philologist, archaeologist and folklorist, who headed the Scholarcheion (secondary school) of Aegina. His daughter bequeathed it to the Municipality of Aegina. The building was damaged in the earthquake of 1981 and was restored with the help of the local community.

Since October 2007 it has housed a collection of historical and traditional objects and archival documents. On the ground floor, an Aeginetan village house with everyday objects and farming tools has been recreated, along with a fisherman’s house with fishing equipment and models of caïques. The courtyard hosts exhibitions, theatre performances and other events.

On the first floor an urban Aeginetan house has been recreated, with furniture, heirlooms, paintings and traditional and urban costumes. The library and the correspondence archive of the Iriotis family are also kept here. The Friends of the Museum Association organises free guided tours on certain dates.
