About the museum
The Folklore Museum of Velventos was founded in late May 2006 and is housed in the restored mansion “Kostas”, a 19th-century building of Macedonian architecture. It is a pilot project implemented with the cooperation of local bodies, scientists and sponsors, with a scientific team from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and with the contribution of the LEADER+ programme, which supported the work on the interior, the installation of the electrical equipment and the purchase of furniture.
The museum is small, with an area of about 300 m². The exhibits, collected for years by the pupils of the primary school and the Morphotikos Omilos (cultural association), record life in rural Macedonia before the industrial age: spinning, weaving, sewing, dressmaking, shoemaking, woodcutting and carpentry. The objects range from a pin to a cauldron and include everything from a christening gown to a stone hand mill. Their arrangement recreates a typical house of the period, where bread was baked and cloth was woven, while the lighting deliberately creates a theatrical atmosphere. The sections “From the Earth to Wine” and “From the Earth to Bread” have more neutral lighting, reminiscent of an outdoor space.
During the guided tour the visitor learns about the history of the place, the daily life of its residents, the tools, the traditional crafts and the local costumes.
