About the museum
The Municipal Map Library of Kozani was founded by the Municipality of Kozani after a long period of maturing the idea. On 12 May 2008 the Municipal Council unanimously approved the programme cooperation of the municipality and the Kovendareios Municipal Library with the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, aimed at organising and promoting the map library. The scientific supervisor of the programme was Professor Evangelos Liveratos.
The Lassanis Mansion, restored by the municipality, in Lassanis Square was designated as the site of the map library, where exhibitions of maps, lectures, seminars and presentations are also held. The map library opened on 11 October 2008, on the 96th anniversary of the city’s liberation, with the major exhibition “Kozani in the World of Maps”, which included a series of rare maps.
A permanent exhibition of maps by Rigas Velestinlis and Anthimos Gazis is presented in the mansion. The exhibitions are documented in information leaflets, which were distributed free of charge to visitors.
