About the museum
The Vourkas Mansion stands in the historic centre of Kozani and is one of the town’s most characteristic buildings. Its construction was completed on 10 June 1748, as attested by the stone inscription on the façade. The name of the mansion is linked to the Vourkas family, merchants who traded with Central and Eastern Europe, and the building is associated with the period of Kozani’s great prosperity as a commercial and intellectual centre.
The building retains its enclosure and traditional courtyard. Inside, the decorated wooden ceilings and the painted wall cupboards, known as mousantres, stand out.
From the Vourkas descendants the mansion passed to the Ministry of Culture. It was restored by the Ephorate of Antiquities with EU co-financing so that it could be visited, and today it is the responsibility of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Kozani.
