About the museum
The Fortress of Rio lies very close to the Rio–Antirrio bridge. Construction began in 1499 on the orders of Sultan Bayezid II, opposite the Castle of Antirrio, so that the Ottomans could control the sea passage leading from the Gulf of Corinth towards the Ionian Sea.
The ground plan of the fortress is almost an isosceles triangle, reinforced by cylindrical towers. On the landward side it is protected by two outer bastions, which are linked to the main castle by stone bridges. Later it passed to the Venetians, who carried out a series of repairs and renovations, and it was then conquered again by the Ottomans.
