About the museum
The Zoological Museum of the University of Patras was founded in 1968 after efforts by the then professor I. Ontrias. It operates under the supervision of the Department of Biology, specifically the Animal Biology Sector, and is housed in the Biology–Mathematics building of the campus in Rio, Patras.
The museum includes an exhibition area, a section of scientific zoological collections, a taxidermy room, a laboratory and auxiliary rooms. In the more than 60 display cabinets of the exhibition area there are a large number of stuffed or otherwise preserved animals, mainly of Greek fauna. Most belong to the vertebrates (cartilaginous fish, bony fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals), but specimens of invertebrates are also displayed, such as sponges, molluscs, arthropods and echinoderms.
In some areas the animals are presented in their natural habitats with dioramas or other visual material. The scientific collections hold more than 3,500 vertebrate specimens and are accessible for research. The museum aims at educating pupils and students, at research and at environmental awareness.
